Welcome
I am Giuseppe Formato, a Boston-based scholar of language, diaspora, and cultural memory. My work examines how language, identity, and power intersect across classrooms, immigrant communities, and urban landscapes, with particular attention to Italian and Portuguese communities in North America and the transatlantic experiences of Azoreans, including those originating from the island of Santa Maria.
Drawing on applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, anthropology, and critical pedagogy, my research explores heritage language learning, linguistic variation and language ideologies, culturally responsive and socially just pedagogies, and the experiences of immigrant communities amid processes of urban and social transformation. Across these contexts, I investigate how language shapes belonging, exclusion, and cultural identity.
My professional work spans secondary and higher education, alongside ongoing international research collaborations. Beyond my academic research and teaching, I engage in literary and cultural translation, public scholarship, and poetry, exploring themes of migration, memory, and transatlantic identity.
This website brings together my publications, research projects, translations, and scholarly collaborations. I welcome opportunities for academic exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community engagement.
Thank you for visiting.
